It appears impossible until we witness someone achieve it. Here is a list of video game characters that appear to have survived the impossible.

In games, the protagonist is sometimes pushed to their breaking point. Whether they’re a fantastic soldier or a valiant fighter, the situation can occasionally grow so grave that you wonder whether they’ll ever make it. But, as they say, nothing is impossible until someone else does it, and these video game characters are proof of that.

Whether it’s a mercenary island or a starship infested with a parasitic creature, these heroes are the ones who have survived the impossible.

Lara Croft – Tomb Raider

Where do we even begin when it comes to Lara Croft? Lara Croft, a fan favorite heroine, has been through several adventures in which she has battled everything from gods to dinosaurs. Survival, on the other hand, was a top objective in the 2013 reboot simply titled Tomb Raider.

Lara Croft transforms from a novice archaeologist to a courageous and daring hero, saving her allies and destroying an island full of cultists on her own. Not to mention fighting an army of Oni and surviving Queen Himiko’s wrathful storm, all while presumably hungry, dehydrated, and fatigued on an island.

Ethan Winters – Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil is notorious for having some of the most lethal adversaries in gaming, with mutated monsters wreaking havoc everywhere they go. However, the characters of Resident Evil are usually well-equipped to deal with such beasts. That is, until Ethan Winters arrives, hunting for his missing wife and finding himself fighting a family twisted by mutated fungi.

Although he has some alterations, Ethan’s ability to deal with life-threatening injuries and gigantic opponents is astounding, especially given that the events of Resident Evil 7 game take place all in one night.

Niko Bellic – Grand Theft Auto 4

It may seem strange to include a protagonist from Grand Theft Auto game on the list, especially because the most of them are infamous criminals who know what they’re getting themselves into and how to handle themselves. But when it comes to Niko Bellic, the stakes are nearly too high.

We must remember that Niko is not just surviving the events of the game, but also a horrible war. He is a one-man army against the Russian mafia, which is powerful enough to burn down his house and chase him and his cousin out of an entire Liberty City sector. Despite the repeated shootouts and close calls, Niko survives even when those around him do not.

Isaac Clarke – Dead Space

Some circumstances are just so awful from the outset that you can’t imagine anyone surviving. Isaac Clarke disproves our assumptions. Dead Space is set aboard an abandoned starship inhabited by Necromorphs, a parasitic species made up of the mutated corpses they infect.

Their primary goal is to infect as many people as possible, and Isaac Clarke is an engineer with limited time and ammo who manages to fend off the Necromorphs and survives.

Clementine – The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead’s environment is harsh, with its often dismal tone and depiction of the darkest portions of humanity, who often tear each other apart faster than any zombie can. That is what distinguishes Clementine.

Clementine survives all four seasons of apocalyptic mayhem, despite being eight at the start of the first season, including fighting off zombies, navigating through swarms of them, rearing a baby by herself, and combating bandits. Despite her tender age, Clementine outperforms grownups in the same world.

Nathan Drake – Uncharted

Nathan Drake is both the world’s luckiest and unluckiest explorer. Throughout the Uncharted series, he has had to hang on for dear life in crumbling ruins or endure a swarm of mercenaries all shooting at him at the same time.

Despite the fact that he sets practically every trap in every tomb he visits, Nathan manages to stay alive by using his wits and obtaining the treasure and his happy ending along the way.

Jason Brody – Far Cry 3

There are few worse vacations than being stranded on an island governed by mercenaries who murder your brother and kidnap all of your pals. Far Cry 3 game sees Jason Brody, a privileged rich kid who has never touched a gun before, become into a warrior who leads a rebellion against the mercenaries and their bosses.

Jason, like Lara, assists in the rescue of his pals. And, although receiving a lot of help from the rebels along the way, the fact that he’s able to take down large encampments of armed men, battle the fauna, and kill Vaas is astounding.

Kazuma Kiryu – Yakuza

Nobody can possibly fight down a hundred guys on his own and take down corrupt criminals like Kazuma Kiryu. He often performs superhuman feats such as fighting through severe injuries, enduring back-to-back fights. And defeating practically every prominent figure from the underworld that opposes him in the Yakuza games.

Kiryu has been beaten with a pipe, stabbed, shot, nearly blown up by a grenade. And beaten up by trained criminals throughout the games. Despite everything, Kiryu finds time to change and grow as a person after surviving it all.

The Courier – Fallout: New Vegas

Although nothing is known about The Courier, they manage to survive what would normally kill anyone, a headshot. We see The Courier in the opening few moments of Fallout: New Vegas. They are tied up, shot in the skull, and buried.

Not only does The Courier survive this, but they are also capable of continuing to move, think. And breathe as if nothing has happened. They also manage to track down their assassin, combat irradiated beasts, slaughter every Legion or NCR soldier that comes their way, and survive some of the Wasteland’s most hazardous areas, including as The Divide and Sierra Madre Casino.

Miles Upshur – Outlast

Some stories are simply not worth telling, and it’s difficult not to believe that Miles Upshur is doing in Funny Shooter 2. Miles is a freelance journalist who infiltrates an asylum where cruel experiments have transformed many of its inmates into psychotic monsters known as variations.

Despite only having a camera, Miles manages to sneak about, escape. And expose the asylum and its experiments to the rest of the world. If that isn’t surviving the impossible, I don’t know what is.
