It takes a certain skill to reimagine a classic property, but this version of Charles Addams’ kooky family pulls it off. The animation is dark and offbeat and there’s plenty of humor for kids and adults alike. Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron do a wonderful job of portraying Gomez and Morticia. Their spooky romance has always been one of the franchise’s strengths, as is their conflict over assimilation and conformity.

The Addams Family movie is a kooky and creepy black comedy that benefits from its well-known cast. Former cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld makes his directorial debut with this adaptation of Charles Addams’ macabre comic characters, which finds the household of Gomez and Morticia living in a mansion overlooking the graveyard of their ancestors. The family’s twisted sense of humor carries the movie, though some of its jokes feel less funny than they should be.

Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston do well portraying the parents, while Christina Ricci and Jimmy Workman make good choices as Wednesday and Pugsley respectively. The film also benefits from the chemistry of its supporting actors, particularly Dan Hedaya’s hysterical Uncle Fester. Moreover, the animation is impressive for being so frightfully cheap and it takes full advantage of the characters’ Gothic style. Also, the character designs allow for looser shapes that were sometimes constrained by poor special effects in earlier animated incarnations. Nitrogen Studios, the animators behind the raunchy Seth Rogen movie Sausage Party, should be proud of their achievement here.

The film has its moments but if you watched the trailers you’d be led to believe there would be more side-splitting funny stuff. There isn’t. The solar movies film also falls short in using animation to its advantage. Nitrogen Studios, who made the raunchy Seth Rogen movie Sausage Party, have taken a very safe approach to the family friendly film.

Oscar Isaac voices Gomez, Charlize Theron, his wife Morticia and Chloe Grace Moretz and Finn Wolfhard as their children Wednesday and Pugsley. Their ghoulish charm and twisted personalities shine through in this new story but they’re fighting a losing battle against a maniacal home improvement TV show host Margaux Needler (Allison Janney). She wants the Addams to fit into her pastel perfect community of Assimilation or leave. It’s a conflict that will entertain kids but to older viewers may speak to issues of gentrification and assimilation. Aside from a few amusing scenes the movie never really takes off.

The animation in this film is good but the film tries too hard to be funny. It resorts to a lot of crude toilet humor including scenes of people peeing on themselves and poop. The film also has several scenes that could be disturbing for young children. The school play the Addams children rehearse and put on involves a lot of fake blood.

Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston are a great pair as Gomez and Morticia while Christina Ricci is creepy as Wednesday. Christopher Lloyd is a lot of fun as Uncle Fester.

While the movie isn’t perfect, it does a great job of paying homage to Charles Addams and his classic TV show and films. It also manages to update the franchise for a new generation while maintaining an impressive grasp of what made it so beloved in the first place. Definitely worth watching.

Final Words
