There are various kinds of impact, from personal to institutional and social. Each impact should be carefully assessed; one person might see themselves becoming successful entrepreneurs and creating jobs while someone else may envision helping more people gain access to education or clean water.
Impact on Individuals
Not everyone considers how their actions impact other people; others take steps to intentionally create change. Their goal is to make a positive difference and work toward tangible goals – this approach is known as social impact.
Individuals and organizations striving to make an impactful social contribution often target specific areas such as poverty reduction, expanding access to education or increasing gender equality. Furthermore, they take care to address environmental concerns while supporting local economies.
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed, deepened and solidified existing socioeconomic inequalities while simultaneously revealing strength, resilience and creativity within society. Furthermore, it presented new challenges which must be met; such as those related to inequality such as employment opportunities, health services access and mental wellbeing – these will need to be approached holistically for maximum effect – this process is known as systems impact analysis.
Impact on Society
Companies make an impactful contribution to society, whether through reducing their environmental footprint or producing products with real world application. Their impacts may be direct or indirect.
As much as it may be difficult, it is still vital for businesses to understand the impact they have on society. A company which pays its workers less than the living wage could be having an adverse effect on society while hiring ex-felons could have positive results for society as a whole.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed, deepened and entrenched inequality and disparity while simultaneously highlighting strength, resilience, creativity and innovation. It had long-term societal effects which will emerge differently across locations and time courses; their consequences will impact individuals, communities, regions and the UK collectively in different ways – but each will matter greatly; which makes CSIS’ work so vital: it prioritizes efforts to make our world better while building public value through innovative, sustainable and scalable means.
Impact on Environment
Environmental issues are disturbances to the normal function of ecosystems that may be caused by humans or natural events, including drought which threatens food production and human health, floods which cause widespread property damage, pollution reducing air quality, or shortening lives of those suffering from chronic lung conditions.
Many environmental problems stem from humans appropriating resources from nature to support their own economic and consumer needs, which scholar Homer-Dixon refers to as “biotic impoverishment.” Ecological scarcity has created an unequal playing field between those with access to what the United Nations considers “man’s first right” – healthy local environments – and those without.
Humans have transformed ecosystems at an unprecedented scale over the Earth’s evolutionary history and at an ever faster rate, making their impacts particularly difficult to assess and control – from extinctions and climate change, through pollution and pollution-induced effects.
Impact on Culture

Their creativity can be seen in vibrant festivals, stunning music performances and charming dance.
Cultural impacts are sometimes less easily grasped than political or economic ones, perhaps due to difficulties associated with measuring changes in cultural practices that are hard to measure. Movements which affect this realm may also have profound ramifications for institutions – for instance students’ willingness to protest at universities, corporations’ desire for reputation management and book publishers’ desire for new genres all present opportunities for movements to impose change on culture.
Understanding how culture impacts individuals and communities is integral to the success of any social movement; however, more research needs to be conducted in order to better comprehend how social movements can create and sustain culture.
