Super Mario 64 is a well-known classic game, but many newer titles have drawn inspiration from it as well.

While Super Mario 64 retains a surprising amount of modern-day appeal for a game so ancient, particularly within the internet speed-running community, the game has been abandoned by many enthusiasts. While The Super Mario Bros Movie reminded many Mario fans of this classic entry. They may opt to look to newer games rather than this original one.

Fortunately, Super Mario 64 spawned several games, both within the Mario franchise and others unconnected to the Italian plumber. Fortunately, in a world full of fantastic remakes of classic games, there are plenty of games that are reminiscent of older gaming days with updated, current graphics and capabilities that go beyond the much-loved speed-running classic.

Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

The N.Sane Trilogy may be ideal for fans of old-school platformers looking for a more updated gaming experience than the originals can currently offer. Crash Bandicoot’s original adventures were a fantastic addition to the platforming genre. And despite the difficulty being higher than many modern gamers are accustomed to, they are nonetheless a lot of fun in a basic yet engaging way.

The N.Sane Trilogy is remarkable since the first of the three games included was released in 1996, the same year as Super Mario 64. While the games have distinct stylistic characteristics, they are both very reminiscent of the mid-90s platform scene.

The Banjo-Kazooie franchise was another popular choice among fans of games like Super Mario 64. While this series hasn’t been updated in a while, there is a much newer colorful platform that has earned numerous comparisons to the style of Banjo-Kazooie from fans and critics.

Yooka-Laylee is a 2017 3D platform game that expresses itself in ways comparable to Super Mario 64. But with a more current design. Originally financed on Kickstarter, this game broke the site’s record for reaching the target in forty minutes. Yooka-Laylee’s basic but charming plot revolves around a chameleon and a bat attempting to reclaim a magical book from an evil corporation. Yooka-Laylee has received a lot of accolades since its release for its entertaining, nostalgic platforming approach. And it even spawned a sequel called Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is without a doubt one of the best instances of a more modern take on the Super Mario 64 style from the Mario franchise itself. This game, which was also released in 2017, follows Mario and his new sentient hat partner as they traveled through several realms in search of Bowser, who had taken Peach and intended to marry her.

With plot points similar to The Super Mario Bros Movie, which was recently released. Fans will be eager to test this game out or return it if they miss Super Mario 64. The level design in the explorative format of Super Mario 64 will be a significant part of the appeal of Super Mario Odyssey for fans of the old game, but Odyssey manages to introduce something new to the franchise while harkening back to the Super Mario 64 approach with various new elements.

New Super Lucky’s Tale

Fans of the level design style of Super Mario 64 will enjoy exploring colorful platform realms in New Super Lucky’s Tale. New Super Lucky’s Tale, a remake of Super Lucky’s Tale with some upgrades over the original, is about a fox named Lucky who travels through various realms utilizing the Book of Ages.

Lucky must prevent a disgruntled member of the Guardian Order, of which his sister and parents are members. From stealing the Book of Ages. While the original game had certain shortcomings, the remake has received widespread appreciation for its level design. And platforming approach, making it an ideal new game for Super Mario 64 fans to play.

Psychonauts 2

For a story that is told completely differently than any Mario adventure. But still features many of the same platforming techniques that fans of other games are familiar with. The new Psychonauts sequel is a long-awaited return to the universe of the psychic ability task force and Raz. A young trainee who enters the minds of other characters to solve a mystery.

This sophisticated plot makes it simple to send Raz through a variety of level styles. And introduce new mechanics in distinct minds. Psychonauts 2 is a terrific game for Super Mario 64 players searching for a stylistic change from the familiar. With high accolades for level design and platforming.

Bowser’s Fury

Bowser’s Fury, released in 2021, was a new installment in the Mario franchise that pitted Mario against Bowser. When his nemesis was controlled by a black sludge. In a game characterized by fans as a variation of Super Mario Odyssey with components from Super Mario 3D World. Mario embarks on an odyssey to save his opponent from the sludge.

This new Mario game isn’t the longest, but it’s a delightful addition to Super Mario 3D World for aficionados of the style of both that Backrooms game and Super Mario 64. Mario lovers will not be satisfied unless they can add a victory against Bowser’s Fury to their resume.

A Hat In Time

A Hat In Time, another platform game launched in 2017, is a throwback style platformer that has been compared by fans and critics to Nintendo 64 platformers such as Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. The plot revolves around Hat Girl, who is attempting to collect watches in order to return home.

The beautiful animation style may be more reminiscent of Kirby over Mario for old-school gaming enthusiasts. But the gameplay is engaging, and the numerous stages are a gloriously colorful mixture of diverse gaming styles. Which will be enormously appealing to fans of games like Super Mario 64.
